I was selected to participate in a jersey design tournament, and I was assigned to design for the Columbus Blue Jackets. Each round had a different theme, so I had the opportunity to come up with a lot of different jersey ideas.
Round One
For the first round, the theme was free-for-all, so I looked to their military roots as inspiration and used chevrons for the striping to replicate insignias. I used the color palette from their current alternate jersey for the home, road, and alternate designs as I felt it was more interesting than their usual shades of red and blue that dominate the league, however I made another alternate look that references their origins in Columbus. Additionally I simplified and recolored their old alternate logo to use as a shoulder patch. Below are some other designs that I left on the cutting room floor.
Round Two
For the second round, the theme was "Wild 90's", so I used their original logo from 2000 and decided to try some pretty out there styling, this time taking inspiration from the flag of Ohio for the striping and shoulder yoke.
Round Three
The theme for the third round was "City Edition", and the only thing I could think about for the city of Columbus was the Ohio State University, so I designed a jersey for the Buckeyes. I created a logo that combined the swooping flag of the Blue Jackets with the O of OSU, used the scarlet, silver, and black from the Buckeyes' color palette, and I recreated the stickers from Ohio State helmets on the shoulder yoke.
